Pupil Premium

  1. What is PP funding?

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools by the government to help reduce the gap in attainment between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The money is allocated to support children who are:

  • Eligible for free school meals, or have been in the last six years
  • In care or previously in care
  • From families with parents in the armed forces
  1. Why was it introduced?

The Pupil Premium was introduced by the government in 2011.

Its main purpose is to:

  • Close the attainment gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers.
  • Provide extra funding to schools so they can support children who may face barriers to learning because of their circumstances.
  • Ensure equality of opportunity, so that all pupils—regardless of background—have the chance to achieve their full potential.
  1. How much is PP funding?

Schools receive extra funding for each child who is eligible for Pupil Premium. The current amounts (2025–26) are:

  • £1,075 per year for each secondary-aged pupil eligible for free school meals (or who has been in the last 6 years)
  • £2,630 per year for pupils who are looked after by the local authority or who have previously been in care
  • £350 per year for children with a parent serving in the armed forces
  1. What are the range of things we do to support pupils and remove the gap?

Pupil Premium funding is given to schools to help children who may face barriers to learning. The Eastwood Academy use this money in a variety of ways to ensure every child can reach their full potential. Common uses include:

  • Extra teaching support – small group or one-to-one sessions to help pupils catch up or extend their learning
  • Specialist support – such as literacy or numeracy interventions, or support for pupils with additional needs
  • Enrichment activities – trips, clubs, music lessons, or sports programs to broaden pupils’ experiences
  • Pastoral and wellbeing support – counselling, mentoring, or social and emotional support
  • Resources and equipment – books, technology, and learning materials to help pupils succeed

For a detailed overview of the pupil premium expenditure please look at the yearly Pupil Premium Report.

Each school is required to publish how they use their Pupil Premium funding and the impact it has on pupils’ progress and achievement
